Home fitness equipment has moved on significantly since the days of the bullworker!
A lot of today’s fitness equipment can be very high-tech, but there are also plenty of simple ones that work extremely well.
Not everyone has access to a local gym, or you may prefer to workout at home.
It might be that you are just starting to get fit and would prefer to gain a basic level of fitness at home before you join a gym.
Whatever your reasons for working out at home, there are some really great products on the market that are designed to suit all levels of fitness.
Choosing Your Fitness Products
One of the biggest considerations for purchasing home fitness gadgets is the cost.
Some of the items on my list are quite expensive, so it’s important to select equipment you know you’ll enjoy using on a regular basis.
It might even be something that you’ve used regularly before in a gym.
You might do quite a bit of travelling and need something to take away with you that can be used anywhere, is light enough to pack, and doesn’t take up much space.
The space you have at home is also a factor.
If you’re not lucky enough to have a converted garage or spare room turned into your own personal gym, then the chances are you’ll be working-out in the living room.
You might also need the space to store your new gadgets.
If you’ve got little ones running around, you don’t want them hurting themselves on a piece of equipment.
Here Are My Top 10 Useful Home Fitness Products:
Dumbbells are an excellent fitness product to use at home.
You can use them to increase strength and muscle mass by performing a routine of static exercises.
Or you could hold a light pair of dumbbells in your hands whilst performing a cardio workout to really ramp up the intensity.
It’s best to have a variety of weighted dumbbells, and instead of having single sets cluttering up your home, you can buy a pair of adjustable dumbbells.
They are not the cheapest item for home fitness, but one of the best investments you can make.
You can perform lots of different exercises with them, and the weight is more than enough to build strength and increase muscle mass.
Here are the 2 highest rated adjustable dumbbell sets on Amazon:
2. Pull-Up Bar
I love my home pull-up bar!
It’s a great piece of equipment that sits permanently above my office door at home.
The pull-up bar is cheap, easy to assemble and provides a fantastic compound exercise.
Pull-ups are hard – no getting around it. One of the toughest exercises there is.
Some people (my girlfriend included – who is actually quite fit!) can’t yet do a single pull-up.
But that’s the beauty of the pull-up bar – you only need to perform a few reps to reap huge physical benefits.
And because it’s a compound exercise you get to work several muscle groups at once.
The pull-up bar I use, and the most popular, is the Iron Gym Total Upper Body Workout Bar.
3. TRX Suspension Trainer
The TRX Suspension Trainer is a relatively new piece of workout equipment but it’s certainly proving to be popular in gyms and now in people’s homes.
The sturdy fabric straps can be easily attached to a doorway or wall, enabling you to perform a whole host of body-weight exercises.
I’ve used the TRX Trainer in my gym, and what I like about it, is the ‘instability factor’.
For example, you can perform push-ups whilst holding the loop handles, suspended a foot above the ground.
This forces you to engage your core muscles a lot more in order to keep yourself stable.
It also works more shoulder and arm muscles, providing a much greater challenge.
There are a ton of safe, body-weight exercises you can perform with this piece of kit and you get a 65 minute DVD and workout guide that demonstrates all the various exercises.
The TRX Suspension Trainer is also very lightweight and can be packed away into a small space or taken with you when you’re travelling.
Here’s a video demonstrating the TRX versatility:
Again the customer reviews on Amazon regarding the TRX are very positive and it’s one of the best Amazon sellers in the fitness category.
4. Aerobic Stepper
The step, stepper or aerobic stepper (whatever name it goes by) is a simple but very effective piece of equipment for improving your aerobic fitness at home.
It’s nice and sturdy with a non-slip platform allowing you to adjust the height depending on your level of fitness.
Step aerobics classes are extremely popular in gyms, but when you can’t make a class or you prefer to workout at home, the stepper is a great option.
There are some excellent step aerobic DVD’s aimed at all levels, so you’ll never get bored with just one routine.
I’ve tried step aerobics a few times, and although it’s not really for me, it is effective in raising your heart beat and for getting a good sweat-on!
I would recommend you invest in a professional step, rather than use some makeshift substitute – simply for the safety aspect, and to be able to adjust the height.
It’s not an expensive investment and can be a very enjoyable way to keep fit.
5. Exercise Band
You can only stretch so far unaided, but with these bands you can safely extend that stretch.
Flexibility training such as yoga and Pilates is becoming more popular, with numerous benefits to being more flexible, especially later on in life.
The Black Mountain Products Resistance Band Set comes with 5 levels of resistance bands, a door anchor, ankle strap, exercise chart and carrying case.
Over 1,000+ positive reviews and growing, this set is the clear market leader.
Exercise bands are a good addition to any fitness routine, enabling you to work on both your strength and flexibility.
6. Fitbit One Wireless Activity Plus Sleep Tracker
Now this is a proper gadget!
The Fitbit One Wireless Activity Tracker is like having a silent personal trainer with you wherever you go!
It literally tracks everything you do, including your steps, distances, stairs climbed, calories burned, sleep cycles – and records it all for easy viewing.
It’s surprising how motivating something as simple as that can be!
You can see all the data on graphs and charts, share and compete with friends, combine it with other apps, get reward badges and so much more.
It’s very addictive and encourages you to be more active in order to see progress and achieve your reward badges.
Here’s a quick video that demonstrates its use:
At the time of writing this, the Fitbit One had over 12,000 positive reviews on Amazon!
7. Insanity / PX90 Exercise DVDs
These 2 leading exercise DVDs took the world by storm!
They are by far the most popular workout DVDs on the internet and have a growing army of fans to support their claims.
Both programs are designed to get harder as you progress, and both only need a small space in your living room.
Insanity places more emphasis on your core but both are fairly similar in what they deliver.
I know people who swear by these DVDs and say it has made a huge difference to their fitness and physique.
Plus you don’t need a gym subscription if you follow the programs.
8. GymBoss Interval Timer
The GymBoss Interval Timer is simply a timing device that you can set according to your workout needs.
For example, if you were to perform the 7 Minute Workout, you could set the GymBoss to sound every 30 seconds, followed by a 10 second sound for the break.
It saves you from having to have a program running on your PC or laptop, or having to keeping looking at your watch.
Although this is a top 10 home fitness gadgets list, the GymBoss is also perfect for the gym.
I like to have a 60, 90 or 120 second break between sets when I’m lifting weights, and it can be a pain to keep having to look at your watch all the time.
So.. home or gym, this is a cool time keeping gadget.
9. Water Rower
Of all the cardio machines in the gym, the rowing machine is simply the best all-rounder there is.
Here’s what Garrett Roberts, an exercise physiologist and the founder of GoRow Studios in Hoboken, New Jersey has to say:
A 50-minute rowing session can burn up to 1,200 calories, twice as many as spinning. Every stroke requires you to work your calves, quads, hamstrings, glutes, abs, obliques, pecs, biceps, triceps, deltoids, upper back, and lats. “Each rep is essentially a leg press, a dead lift, and a row. And because you’re working every muscle group in your body, your heart rate is elevated.
I’ve chosen the water rower over the concept 2 version, (which are at similar price-points) because the water rower would look so sleek in your home.
Admittedly it would take up quite a bit of room, but if you have the space, then this rower would be a great investment.
The water concept mimics actually rowing on water, and it is much quieter than the chain propelled versions.
Here’s a short video that gives you a closer look and feel of the water rower:
If you think there is a cool home fitness gadget I should include, please let me know and I might extend the list.
